The new coordinated surgical care facility at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital offers “wrap-around” services for patients having inpatient surgery, one-day surgery and those scheduled for diagnostic and interventional procedures. The Perioperative Services Center (formerly called Day Surgery) streamlines care by providing support to all surgical patients and their families before, during, and after surgery
Before Surgery Surgical care facility staff help patients and their families through the experience of surgery. The patient education process begins well before the day of surgery. Patients are told what to expect when entering the hospital as well as preparing to go home. “It is important to know as much about this experience as possible,” says Randal Meyer, RN, Surgical Services manager at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. He says surgery requires a team effort and that patients and families are an essential part of the team.
Coordinated pre-surgery services include an interview with the pre-surgery assessment specialist for a review of the patient’s history and current medications. Patients are given specific instructions for the day of surgery, required consent forms, and information about anesthesia and insurance authorization.
On the day of surgery, nurses begin pre-surgery care in one of 18 new pre-surgery bays equipped with state-of-the-art physiological monitoring equipment.
During Surgery Surgery, diagnostic and interventional, takes place in one of six operating rooms. To provide accuracy before surgery begins, the entire surgical team takes a “time out” to verify correct patient, correct site, etc.
During surgery, immediate family members in the waiting area receive updates from the surgical team.
After Surgery Patients are monitored and cared for after surgery in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Family members reunite with patients in the Perioperative area, or if inpatient, in the patient’s hospital room.
New Facility Has Room to Grow The Perioperative Services and Surgical Services facility offers services in an environment designed to provide patients and their families the highest level of care and support. The new facility “creates more space to accommodate the increase in patients we’ve seen over the past few years,” says René Fredette, RN, Perioperative Services supervisor. “Another benefit is we also have room for expansion.” She and her staff of 21 oversee surgical patients from the moment they enter the facility, through discharge and follow-up with phone contact in the days following a procedure.
Some Stats Last year 2,211 outpatient surgical visits were performed at Bozeman Deaconess. Examples of outpatient surgeries—for all age ranges—include orthopedic, general, OB/Gyn, ear, nose and throat, and urology.
Another 888 patients had surgery followed by overnight hospital stays in 2006.
