The fierceness and strength of mothers have been well documented. There are many examples; mothers whose children are under cars have summoned great reserves of strength in order to lift the vehicle and free them; mothers who cover forty or fifty feet in an instant to catch their toddler falling off the jungle jim; mothers who break down doors to get to their babies accidentally locked inside. Yes, indeed, there is no measure to a mother's resolve.

The same is true in the bear world - and if a human mother can discover great strength, just imagine what a bear mother can do. And they'll need it too, if they're going to fight off a hungry boar.

There is a well known, if not exactly pretty, phenomena in the bear world whereby a boar will try to find sows with cubs in the wild. Then they'll try to kill the cubs in order to impregnate the sow with their own young. It's one of the reasons world-famous Grizzly 399 stays so close to the roads in Grand Teton. She knows that, oddly enough, humans are less of a danger to her cubs than boars, at least in the protected environs of a National Park.

So when this boar even looks at this fierce sow's cubs, she shoots over to him and, well, kicks his big butt up and down the coast of Alaska (where this was filmed, as you probably already guessed). The big boar, his pride wounded, decides to try to find another girlfriend, and finally leaves.

It's a truly remarkable piece of footage, and another stark reminder NEVER to put yourself between a mama bear and her cubs, because like a lot of human mothers too, she'll do anything to keep them safe.
