Anglers ply the waters for wily lake trout during the fall fishing derby, sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The fishing event serves the lake’s ecological balance by thinning the voracious species, also called mackinaw. Up to $150,000 will be awarded via lottery drawings, prizes, tagged fish, and bonuses. Anglers may fish the entire lake with check-in stations at Somers, Wayfarers and Big Arm state parks, Blue Bay and Polson; bonus days for tagged fish are Tuesdays-Thursdays.The derby culminates in a fish fry and awards ceremony at Blue Bay.
