VIDEO: Men Free Frightened Baby Moose From Fence

We at Distinctly Montana love animal rescue videos.  We love animal attack videos too, don't get us wrong.  But it is wonderful to see that it isn't all animosity (pun half-intended) between humans and the flora and fauna of the west.  Frequently they save us, metaphorically speaking.  And sometimes we get the honor of saving an animal. 

In this touching video uploaded to Youtube, two British Columbia men struggle to help a moose yearling get loose from a fence.

One of the men recounts how "somehow the words 'there's a moose stuck in your fence' doesn't register on the brain the way you might think ... instead of 'ya, okay ... I'll get right on that' it's more the reaction of a double 'huh?' or 'w-w-whaa-what?'"

Nevertheless, the men sprung into action, grabbing a hatchet and tearing apart the gate of their own fence to get the baby moose free.  Frequently encounters between humans and moose are tense because moose are territorial creatures, prone to charging.  But this baby moose, perhaps owing to its age, seems almost reluctant to go once freed.  Almost as if it is saying thanks. 

The man who freed the animal said that he noticed the moose had "the biggest brown eyes I had ever seen," and speculates that it had tried to jump the gate but hadn't achieved the necessary height, it's front paws falling in between the slats of the gate.
