VIDEO: It's bear VS bison in this Yellowstone heavyweight bout

Montana might not have the MGM Grand or Caesar's Palace, but that doesn't mean we don't have some heavyweight matches of our own.

A vacationing family in June got front row (or at least pretty close) seats to a bona fide Montana heavyweight clash of the titans when they caught a tussle between a grizzly bear and a bison, mano a mano.  Or buffalo a bearo.

It starts out with the combatants circling one another, and at a moment or two it appears that the bison has the bear on the retreat.  But it quickly wheels around and takes the fight back to the bison.

Granted, I'm no wildlife expert. But I don't know who to bet on in this scenario.  The bison likely weighs nearly twice as much as the grizzly, but then the bear has the edge where claws and jaws are concerned.  But never discount those horns, which the buffalo, if he bobs and weaves just right, might be able to use to even the odds.

But by the time that the bear and the bison make the bridge, it appears that the bison is slowing down.  The bear is warring a battle of attrition, wearing its enormous prey down.  But once they get into the water the advantage seems to be squarely on the bear's side.

By the time they reach the river bank, the bison is done.  It's the most vicious biting since Tyson V. Holyfield.

Well, that's it, ladies and gentlemen, collect your bets, cash out, and we'll see you at the next great Montana heavyweight fight: a vole versus a lemming presented live in the underbrush of the Bitterroot National Forest.  Expect the first two or three rows to be splashed with blood.
