VIDEO: Scary Hiker vs. Mountain Lion Encounter at Glacier National Park
Trevor Rasmussen got the thrill of a lifetime while enjoying a summer hike at Glacier National Park. As he made his way through the thick canopy of summer foliage on a narrow trail, he noticed a mountain lion sitting directly on the path only fifty feet away.
As Trevor begins filming, he mentions how he barely noticed the big cat blocking the trail, and indeed was lucky that he had. A startled mountain lion does not make for a pleasant hike!
After a few moments, the lion lips his chops a few times, glances at Rasmussen, and begins walking toward him, crouched low to the ground.
Trevor begins shouting at the cat, clapping his hands, and continuing to make noise until the mountain lion leaves the trail and heads into the brush.
The lion soon reappears and takes another hungry glance at Trevor, again licking his lips. Trevor now begins a new mantra of, "Good kitty!"
The cat again stops and turns to look at Rasmussen. They have a tense few moments while the cat stares at Trevor. A large abscess is most visible on the cat's left jaw in this shot.
The cat continues licking his lips, glancing at Trevor, seeming to size him up and consider whether he would be a worthy opponent. Trevor seems to recognize this and shouts, "Hey, hey! Okay, dude!"
Finally, the mountain lion seems to decide that there are easier meals to be had in the bounty of Glacier National Park and slinks off into the forest.
Trevor notes that he was carrying bear spray, and reported the incident to park rangers, showing them the video and pointing out the large abscess on the lion.
