VIDEO: Disrespectful Motorcyclists Get Too Close to Bison Calves in Yellowstone

UPDATE:

The men (and not kids, as we speculated) are 25-year-old Dallin McCallister and 36-year-old Tyler McCallister.  They have appeared in front of a federal judge and are charged with riding vehicles in places they shouldn't, and intentionally frightening the wildlife.  They have plead NOT guilty.  The NBCMontana article can be read HERE.

Bikers harassing bison

It's a fact: someone does something stupid in Yellowstone National Park every single day. But most of the time it's not out of malice, but out of ignorance.  People approach wild animals in the Park because they want a good selfie, or they want to pet a bison -- stupid, yes.  But malicious, no.

But this video, taken on 9/11 in the Park, shows not only foolhardiness but a general lack of regard for the Park's wildlife.

Uploaded to Youtube just this morning, the video centers on a goup of young motorcyclists abusing animals in the park by getting too close to them, including riding their motorcycles close to juvenile bison and off-road.  They were lucky enough to avoid the same fate as the woman in this summer's other biker/bison encounter, at least.

Biker with bison

The video highlights a bigger issue that is inherent to National Parks.  They are at once nature preserves, ways of protecting parsels of natural wilderness from the encroachment of development, and (at least in the eyes of some people) amusement parks.  And when you go to the amusement park, you go with a sense of entitlement; you go to be amused.  And if that means that you're going to buy a fried twinkie, that means you'll do it, and damn the consequences.  When you go to a place with that kind of mindset, especially one that teems with dangerous and precious wildlife, you risk  not just a stomachache but the wellbeing and even lives of those around you.

We show this video not to point any fingers at the kids.

Certainly we don't know these young people, and we assume that they are decent kids, that their parents raised them to respect other people and animals.  They are probably just acting with the abundance of confidence and daring that characterize youth.  But they are also playing with forces that dwarf them in every sense, not to mention can run at 35 mph and weight up to a ton.

Please, please, please.  If you are going to go into a National Park, a sacred and treasured place, a place that exists to facilitate a communion with the beauty and power of nature, behave with a little regard for others.  And don't piss off the giant beasts.

Personally, I WOULD point a finger at the kids. ESPECIALLY if their parents raised them to be responsible, caring people. This was neither, and their actions are reprehensible.

I certainly hope someone got their license plate number and they were dealt with through the courts.
H h (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:28
I sure hope and pray the rangers cought up with them or a tag # was gotten . This is so disrespectful and wrong on so many levels. Very unacceptable for anyone to do anything like this and what they was thinking is beyond me.

Courts are useless, they will get a slap on the hand, wish the buffalo would have taken care of them. Until the courts slam their butts in jail and take their license they will not pay attention.

Oh I do hope so!!! My husband, myself and grandson went last month. I'm so glad he didn't have to witness this! We were fortunate to have seen 2 bison; miles apart.. He was so impressed by their size! He said it was so nice that the park let them live there too be safe..(this from a 7yr.old)
I can't imagine how upset he would been; watching those uncaring people, torturing these poor animals that he was happy for.. Thank You HEAVENLY FATHER, for sparing our loving grandson; the anxiety he would have experienced..
BTW~ His mother would have truly been appalled by this behavior! I can envision her running down the road, to get those plate numbers!!! She's a Big supporter of Yellowstone and all wildlife..

Ya know.. It would have been just rewards, if those bison had attacked; too save their babies!! >Apparently those dopes don't know how to read!
The information the Ranger gave them at the gate, Specifically Sates: 'The animals in the park are Wild and Protected!'! What part, was hard to get?!
Throw the book at these creeps!
•Take away their Privilege go to National Parks; for 2 years!! Maybe they'll appreciate them more..
•Steep fines!! They intentionally harassed these poor beasts; in their own home!!
•Put pictures and names of them, in the papers and social media!! Maybe humiliation will give them respect, >for living creatures and >people who they affect; with their actions..
Just ideas, to deal with inconsiderate people...

If I said what should be said, you would not approve it after reviewing it. As the mother of 6, not one of my offspring would get away unscathed if I found out they pulled a bone headed stunt like this. If their families and friends think this is okay, add that to the ever growing list of what's wrong with this nation.
Joseph (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:39
I fully agree with you. I'm old school and I was raised to respect nature and the wild creatures. I came from a big family and we grew up with boundaries and we knew better than to breech those boundaries. We never would've been out there that close to the wild. Those mopeds could fail you any moment and if those majestic. creatures turned on you, you'd be in serious trouble.

Wanona Merrill (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 08:07
I agree with Anita Franco...there are consequences for everything you do in life and if it is harsh enough to make you stop and think before doing another selfish disrespectful act then it is a good lesson. Letting them get off with no consequences teaches them nothing. If you are old enough to drive, you are old enough to know right from wrong.

You have no business having 6 kids, nobody does.
Connie FLynn (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 17:00
You give these "kids" too much credit. They show nothing but disrespect for Yellowstone Park and should be banned from parks.
Robert Carnes (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 18:24
Not only harassing wildlife but also off road operation of a motor vehicle, destruction of vegetation the judge can take their bike znd auction them off. If under 18 parents are financially responsible for damages.

To bad one of the bulls didnt confront them , it would have been a hard lesson learned !
Beckie Rees (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 18:41
This is a place to respect and All the wildlife - we won't have nothing for the future if this allowed. No this isn't ok they need to be held accountable for this and yes there parents need to know. If an adult did this they would be a law to take care of it!! Please do something about this or we won't have nothing left to see in our future..

Ok boomer!
Anonymous (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 19:11
Yeah and if that bison had killed him, they would have had to probably kill the bison! What a bunch of boneheads that should never be allowed back into any park! Ignorance is gotten to old, and people need to start respecting Mothers Nature!
Tanya Peterson (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 19:28
If you don’t respect nature you should be ban from parks! Animals are not toys or something to entertain you. They are here to be admired.

Find out who they are, find out who their parents are, take their precious bikes away from them, and prosecute!
Dustin Schneider (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 20:56
What's the point of a story like this? Show a video of some knuckleheads and say they're probably pretty good kids with good parenting. I wouldn't have felt a bit sorry for them if the bison would have gotten a hold of them and taught them some manners. Obviously their parents didn't. But then again, police are bad and rioting is good so there is the example.
C Boot (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 20:59
I really hope someone wrote down some license plate numbers and turned them over to the rangers. This is blanton disrespect. They are not only endangering themselves and others but, ruining the terrain with the motorcycles. There are roads for a reason. The bison were extremely tolerant of someone trespassing in there area. These people deserve to be fined and banned from the National Parks for some time.
JoAnn Shults (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 21:18
To many people are allowed in the park it's completely overcrowded the Rangers are overworked and understaffed animals need a whole lot more protection after all it is their home.

Yellowstone park officials are just to damn stupid for leaving the park open to public. The human race is even worst then the most brutal animals on the planet. The whole earth is cover with roaches (the humans) that just destroy the earth. And worst, i guess we have NO respect for any type of biological life on earth. These motorcyclists just proved that.
Bill (not verified) , Wed, 09/16/2020 - 13:47
You sound like a potential serial killer.
Anonymous (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 21:49
Ya it's to bad I was hoping the bison would get the last laugh
Lisa Csco (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:06
They should be charged and arrested. Stories like this are posted all the time and everyone knows NOT to do this. No more excuses, time for people to be arrested with big fines given to them and community service. This needs to stop.
Rramz (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:23
I could care less if the idiots on the motorcycles get trampled hurt/killed. I do care greatly if a bison suffers an injury as a result
Joseph (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:26
Why are there always people who try to push the envelope to see how far they can go without without suffering the consequences? They look like minors and why are their parents allowing this? A bison can turn on you in a heartbeat, they're creature of the wild
Lydia James (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 22:40
I am thinking of a lot of things to say but only can say "YOU CAN'T CURE THE STUPID"
Ann (not verified) , Mon, 09/14/2020 - 23:41
I hope someone reported those kids to the proper authorities. And especially to their parents. That was so disrespectful and very STUPID!
Don Burton (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 00:04
Sure hope this was turned over to the NPS there in the park. There will be ways to identity then from video going into one of the entrances. Please follow back up if they get busted.
Bruce Frye (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 01:00
The motor cycle riders should be arrested & given heavy fines. And let it be known at major areas in the park. Make sure people are told STRONGLY at the gate, NOT TO bother the wildlife and explain the Bison are dangerous & to be left alone, or subject to heavy fines !! Be sure the Rangers ask if they understand before they are admitted thru the gates..especially younger motor cycle riders. Older riders likely have more sense & responseabilty.
Bonnie B (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 01:45
Hope these kids got caught hope they went to court and got a hefty fine plus community service and Never allowed back in Yellowstone Park these Animals just want to live their lives in Peace People just don't have respect it's a Shame
Big Red (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 06:04
This is reprehensible. Their is no respect or intelligence represented by this act of terror against man and nature. The national parks were not created for people like these people. They are lucky they were not hurt or gored to death. The persons responsible should be punished, fined, do community service, get educated on the law, confiscate their motorcycles banned for life from any national or state park for life. ....and ap lo eulogize to the Amercan public.
Billy J Woosley (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 06:21
I’m routing for the buffalo to run their butts over and trample those motorbikes!
Karim (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 06:30
Those kids should be called out and BANNED FOR LIFE from our National Parks. PERIOD. Too bad the bison didn't mangle them.
NJDave (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 06:35
Those kids are criminals going off the road on vehicles, they're lucky the Bison put up with them. They should be fined and their cycles taken from them.
Wally’s Whirled (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 06:52
What are they doing taking motorcycles off-road in an undesignated area of a National Park? Add yet another sign of warning, I suppose because some people can be stupid and their actions take away privileges that others respectfully enjoy.
Bison can put you in the hospital or worse, kiddos!

Patti (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 07:28
These kids need to be set straight!! This is a disgusting, disrespect of wildlife!! These kids NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!! They are very lucky the bison ran away from them in that meadow! Those morons would have had no chance if the bison chose to confront them. The young idiots could gave been badly injured or perhaps even KILLED, then the parents would be suing!! It is their stupid kids that caused the problem, but, they would be suing!! We have such a sick and twisted world anymore!!
JillAnderson (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 07:40
Our national parks are here to respect wildlife and the forests they are safe within. We All get to share in it’s natural untouched beauty.
Just going into the meadow is one violation...chasing Buffalo is NOT acceptable!
Be kind to everything that lives?
Maria Kingston (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 07:52
Arrest those ******** and ban them from all parks forever. No kidding. Ignorance personified.
John (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 07:57
These guys are just stupid! I have been riding adv. For years and never have seen such herigence. I'm glad I was not there I would have beat the hell out of them. Taken the keys and left them to bleed out.

Robin (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 08:14
Decent kids wouldn't do something like this. They were being jerks and should be caught.
Then delt with a proper punishment!!
Justin Fievet (not verified) , Tue, 09/15/2020 - 08:19
Anyone breaking the rules of the Park should be automatically fined $100,000, and lifetime ban from the Park. As far as someone getting gored or flipped by a elk, buffalo, or bear in the Park by not respecting the animals space, that's just natural selection. Fourth generation Montanan here and proud.
