VIDEO: Grizzly 399 & Cubs Walk Through Wilson, Wyoming
Grizzly 399, the most famous grizzly bear in the world, concerned her many fans across the planet when she wandered away from the relative safety of the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area and into Wilson, Wyoming.
It's been a problematic season for Grizzly 399. She has been struggling to put on sufficient weight for her to survive the hibernation season, and now, with her appearance in Wilson and surrounding environs, she has come farther south than she has ever been seen before.
Grizzly 399 is very used to humans. When she has a litter of cubs, she will frequently travel on roads because she is less likely to be attacked by a boar so near to cars. In the backcountry, grizzly boars will, if they find a female with cubs, sometimes try to kill the cubs in order to mate with the female themselves.
As a result, Grizzly 399 may associate humans with safety. And while there is no evidence that anyone has ever fed Grizzly 399, she has nevertheless decided to try to find food among the humans.
This comes after a dramatic season for Grizzly 399. The most recent news, before this southerly sighting, was that one of her cubs had a limp - but the prognosis is good, and the cub seems healthy.
If you encounter Grizzly 399 - or any grizzly - please keep your distance and never, ever feed the bears. Bears that are fed by humans will come to rely on them as a food source, which can result in death or injury to both humans and bears.
