VIDEO: Yellowstone Grizzly Repositions Bison Corpse To Get At Soft Meat

Yellowstone National Park is one of the best places in North America to watch the dramas of the natural world play out.  Sure, we can imagine a bear biting into a big hunk of bison, but we would miss some of the complexities of the encounter.  For instance, what if the bear can't get to the meat he likes best?  Will he have to move a bison that could weigh between up to 2000 pounds?

Taken a couple of years ago in Yellowstone, this captures the moments after a bison, evidently injured by a car, managed to cross the Yellowstone River before succumbing to its injuries.  As you can see, the bison was now surrounded by carrion birds - and one big bear.  But the bear wanted access to the meat of the underbelly, the softest and easiest meat on the animal.  So he carefully, and with fantastic effort, hefts the full-grown bison onto its side.

Though the bear didn't kill the animal himself, he most likely stayed around to guard the corpse for a few days, sharing it only reluctantly with the ravens and crows.

But if there's a lesson to the video, it's this: no matter how strong you are, a grizzly bear is a whole heck of a lot stronger.
