New Episode: Charley Pride, From the Helena Smelter to Country-Western Superstar

Before Charley Pride sold tens of millions of records and stood among the biggest names in country music, he was tending a furnace at the East Helena lead smelter, where molten slag burned hotter than volcanic lava and one wrong move could follow a steel bar into the fire.
He had come to Montana for baseball, not music. He batted .444 for a team the smelting company sponsored, chased tryouts with the Angels and the Mets, and kept believing the major leagues were his future. On the side, almost as an afterthought, he sang Hank Williams songs in all-white, country-to-the-core bars in Helena and Anaconda, driving 80 miles each way for forty dollars a night and a few hours of sleep before his shift.
The newest episode of Distinctly Montana Stories follows the years that turned a would-be ballplayer into a country legend, including the night a borrowed guitar and a single sentence from an old country star backstage pointed him toward Nashville. It is a Montana origin story most of his millions of fans never knew.
