VIDEO: Bear Charges and Tackles Bow Hunter

Black bear charges hunter

Watching this footage is about as close as we ever want to be to being attacked by a bear.  It lets you experience all the adrenaline with none of the pesky being shred to pulled human pork.

The video, uploaded to Youtube by a bow hunter, begins with the hunter eyeing and being eyed by a black bear a few yards away.  Armed with a bow, the hunter's not in a great position to defend himself if the bear should charge (and remember, if you kill a bear, even a charging bear, you'd best prepare for a grueling legal fight and maybe a nasty fine).

The bear inches closer and closer as the hunter fiddles with his camera and his bow.  Then in an instant the bear decides to try his luck.  The bear is covering the distance between them very quickly.  The hunter begins to yell - first in an effort to scare the bear away, and then finally in a yelp of potent fear as the bear overtakes him.

The camera settles to rest while pointing down into a puddle.  The man is dead.

No, just kidding, the man is alive and well, and the bear only wanted to tackle him before running off.  Though fatalities do occur in the proximity of black bears, they are much less vicious than grizzly bears.  In fact, grizzly bears will rarely kill you unless they feel sufficiently threatened.

As for the hunter, he had this to say: "I am so happy after this confrontation with a black bear during our spring hunt. No wounds except a bruised elbow and ego where the bear threw me down. Genuinely happy that this was a non-fatal or tragic outcome. Proving that the black bear is a wild and unpredictable animal. Again so happy with the outcome."

Perhaps the bear was pissed off with the logging destruction of its environment

What the bleep was this guy doing? If he isn't going to shoot the bear why load the bow? He's lucky to be alive.

Noticed that myself. We dont have land megafauna other than 3 tonne crocodiles. But it is amazing that California has an extinct bear on its state flag etc..... The inroduced a cousin closely related from up north, for what reason? Make it seem less damaging?
fortnum canus (not verified) , Tue, 08/31/2021 - 17:33
Original intent for the California state flag was to put a Pear on it. The Gov Bartlett did a bad drawing or the ink ran but it was misinterpreted as Bear. That's why there is a Bear on the flag.

forests are replanted and grow faster than we can use them.

Would not have been a legal battle or a fine you have the right to defend yourself....
Jane R (not verified) , Sat, 02/27/2021 - 10:35
You don't need to defend yourself if you aren't there hunting the bear, so not defending. The BEAR was defending itself.

Depends on which state you happen to be in.
Michael McDermott (not verified) , Thu, 10/08/2020 - 11:00
Legal fight or not, that bear will be dead!
Pamela MacDermontt (not verified) , Sat, 11/14/2020 - 01:47
Yes, in this situation you would have to defend your life if you wanted to live!

Hope I'm wrong, but the arrow looks like a target arrow and has only one backup arrow in his quiver
Another anonymous (not verified) , Thu, 01/07/2021 - 13:18
That is what I saw also! Was not a broad head arrow, so would it even tickle a bear?

Do not play with wild animals. You are lucky.
Zach Osbourne (not verified) , Sun, 07/04/2021 - 20:18
Thats what he gets for shooting animals with sticks, bring a rifle next time you hunt!
Jillian (not verified) , Sun, 07/04/2021 - 20:36
To me this is fair game. If you put yourself near to a wild animal, it is nonsense to blame the animal. He is protecting himself in his domain just as you would if a bear entered your home. We do NOT have enough respect for animals' sense of territory.
Arbitrator (not verified) , Mon, 07/05/2021 - 01:35
Why the hunter is not dead? ??
sidney mehlschmidt (not verified) , Mon, 07/05/2021 - 08:04
After moving to Alaska, I'd take a shotgun along when I went fishing. It was really heavy, so I bought one of those compressed air airhorns. I chased off several bears with it
, but they had to be fairly close for the noise to make them run away.

I hope he was hunting other game and came across the bear because that bow set up ain't bagging a bear.

Fred Bear killed alot of bears with a recurve.
Larry Barr (not verified) , Mon, 07/05/2021 - 10:56
So, the bear just knocked him down and ran off? Looks like bears do have a sense of humor.
Dixie Pearson (not verified) , Tue, 07/06/2021 - 14:06
Glad it had a good outcome all the way around.
TJ Bass (not verified) , Tue, 08/24/2021 - 03:17
What was he hunting with a target arrow and a recurve bow???
Carol Stelzik (not verified) , Thu, 09/30/2021 - 11:56
Probably hunting a bird of some sort.
Lol
Suzanne Rehbock (not verified) , Sat, 04/02/2022 - 09:30
